Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake has officially confirmed that a fifth film in the John Wick led by Keanu Reeves is already in early development.
This means that, after the extraordinary success of the fourth installment, the film studio has decided to put it back on the table John Wick 5. “What is official is that Dancer will be the first spin-off to be released next year. We are developing three more films, including John Wick 5 and a television series, The Continental, which will air soon. And so, we’re building the universe of John Wick and when those five films come, it will be organic, it will have grown organically from how we are starting to tell those stories,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Joe Drake.
Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves will team up again in the fifth sequel
The fifth sequel should once again see Chad Stahelski as director, alongside Reeves in the lead role of the iconic assassin.
The fourth film grossed a whopping $73.8 million domestically. Overseas, the film also enjoyed impressive box office success, opening to $141.1 million worldwide.
In recent weeks, there was no guarantee of John Wick 5
Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake reiterated a The Hollywood Reporter in recent weeks that the fifth film is no longer out of the question. He explained: “There is a will and there is an opening. And one could certainly interpret that ending in different ways. We’ll get some rest and then brainstorm to see if there’s a credible way to do number five. But there’s no guarantee.”
The obstacle to overcome was Reeves and Stahelski
Drake had also mentioned the creative process of Reeves and Stahelski: “Keanu and Chad, rightly so, are very careful never to make fun of the audience. So we certainly have our work cut out for us…”, he said, referring to the fact that the producers would certainly have wanted to continue with the franchise (given the recent enormous success), but the challenge would be to convince the protagonist and director. “Keanu is so loved and that character is so loved,” Drake points out (even though we were all well aware of it).
Regardless of how the fifth film plays out, Reeves should return to character in the future. In fact, he will also appear in Ballerina, the first spin-off of the series with Ana de Armas in the role of another assassin.
The will is to continue to “expand this franchise”
“We are moving to expand this franchise. We’re not talking about video games yet, but we’re doing it through spin-offs and television productions, which is a great space to expand narrative universes and reach a large audience. Dancer will be released next year, and we are developing three more productions, including John Wick 5 and the series The Continental. We are building our narrative universe, and with the release of the fifth film we will have proposed something organic. But I can assure you that John Wick productions will have a regular cadence from now on ”, said Joe Drake of Lionsgate in these hours.
