The literary work will include never-before-seen photographic material, as well as stories and comments from Cash’s son and Stielper, the musical historian who has always followed the Cash and Carter families, two blazons of folk, country (and rock, come on ) stars and stripes.
Historian Brian Dempsey has provided many unpublished images for this project, which intends to celebrate one of the most exceptional careers in American music.
Johnny Cash: The Life in Lyrics will be released on November 23rd and will be published by White Rabbit in the UK. For now there is no official news about a possible publication for the Italian market.
Johnny Cash’s son: ‘There’s no better way to get to know my dad’
John Carter Cash, son of Johnny and co-author of this highly anticipated work, said that “there is no better way to get to know my father than by looking at his written works”. And in fact this book should have three authors, given that there is also a lot of writing by Johnny Cash himself, considering that the texts written by himself are the raw material.
For the first time the Cash family opened the archive
Johnny Cash: The Life in Lyrics it marks a historic moment also because it is the first time that the Cash family opens the personal archive, sharing unpublished shots, documents and memories of the patriarch of folk-rock.
Johnny Cash’s art emerges in his writing, and in fact the title of the book focuses precisely on the fact that to get to know this musician in depth you need to go to the source of his soul, a source that is put on paper by his sublime pen.
Johnny Cash and his pen
“Whether it was the songs he recorded, his poetry or unpublished material during his lifetime, he put his heart, blood and spirit into everything he added a pen to,” said John Carter Cash (the which, we recall, is a record producer, songwriter and film producer, born from the marriage between Cash and another legend of country and folk: June Carter Cash.Cash’s wife and descendant of a family of bluegrass musicians called The Carter Family, she was married to Johnny Cash for 35 years. She died at the age of 73, four months before her husband’s death, following complications during a heart valve replacement).
Back to us, John Carter Cash added, “I am delighted to see this book published and to know that his brilliance and life are being honored by focusing on his greatest life creation, his words.”
A book that is a “portrait through texts”
Editor Lee Brackstone said the forthcoming book is a “portrait through text, contextual commentary, rare and ephemeral photographs of a man whose outlaw spirit is now deeply and irresistibly entwined with the whole concept of Americana”. the expression “American” today refers to roots rock, the rock of the roots, which would be the various strands that make up rock, such as country, blues, folk and bluegrass)”.
The book will also be released in 750 deluxe editions
