Josh Homme turns 50. Born in Palm Springs on May 17, 1973, is considered one of the most eclectic musicians on the US music scene. Give him beginning with the Kyuss then became the leader of the Queens of the Stone Age, as well as having created numerous other side projects. Here are the milestones of his career

KYUSS – Homme started playing guitar at the age of 9 and was already in a band at 12, Autocracy. In 1987 he was then among the founders of Kyuss, of which he was the guitarist. The group churned out four studio albums between 1991 and 1995, establishing themselves as pioneers of stoner rock. They disbanded after the album came out …and the Circus Leaves Town to give each member the opportunity to follow their own artistic path

GOODBYE AND THE CAUSE – In 1997, a so-called split album was released, titled Kyuss/Queens of the Stone Age, a sort of passing of the torch for Homme’s new band. Years later, in 2012, the former members of Kyuss faced a lawsuit over the misuse of their former band name. Eventually it was decided that the Kyuss Lives! (as some of Homme’s former teammates had renamed themselves) had to change their name to Vista Chino

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE – After the end of the adventure with Kyuss, Josh Homme moved to Seattle to play with Screaming Trees. And he started recording songs under the name Gamma Ray and then changed his name to Queens of the Stone Age. The self-titled debut album, from 1998, was recorded only by Homme and Alfredo Hernandez. Bassist Nick Oliveri joined them along with Dave Catching for the tour

TRAINING CHANGES – The first album had an excellent response from critics and sales but in the following years the formation of the band changed several times, with Josh Homme continuing to remain the only fixed cornerstone. The second studio record was Rated Rwhich opened to highly positive reviews but modest commercial success

WORLDWIDE SUCCESS – In 2002, for the third album of the band (Songs for the Deaf), Dave Grohl and Mark Lanegan also joined the group. The disc was a great success with real hits such as Go with the Flow And No One Knows. At the beginning of 2004 in full tour Nick Olivieri was removed and the following year the band’s fourth album arrived, Lullabies to Paralyzewith a training practically completely different from the previous job (except Homme)

THE FOLLOWING WORKS – In the following years the first live album was released (Over the Years and Through the Woods) and in 2007 the fifth studio album, It was Vulgaris. A phase therefore began in which Homme and the other members also dedicated themselves to other projects, thus effectively reducing the work with the QOTSA. The band’s next album is …Like Clockwork in 2013, with numerous luxury participations (from Grohl to Trent Reznor, from Elton John to Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys)

THE LAST YEARS – In 2017 it came out Villainsseventh studio work by Josh Homme and partners, while the release (six years after the last work) of In Times New Romannew album by the band, which will then be engaged in a tour of North America and Europe

OTHER PROJECTS – Josh Homme has participated in many musical projects over the years: he has played guitar for other bands (such as Screaming Trees), has written songs for soundtracks, has been a producer and has appeared as a soloist on albums- collected as Killer Queen: A Tribute to Queen. But he is also the co-founder of other bands

EAGLES OF DEATH METAL – EoDM was formed in 1998 thanks to the collaboration of Homme (here as drummer) with Jesse Hughes (who later became the leader of the formation). The band became sadly famous in the world in 2015 because it was the group that was playing at the Bataclan on the evening of November 13, when there were the attacks in Paris, including the one in the club that cost the lives of 89 people. The members of the group (except Homme who was not present on that date) managed to escape from the stage and were unharmed

THEM CROOKED VULTURES – The supergroup was formed in 2009 with Josh Homme as singer-guitarist, Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters on drums and John Paul Jones, historic Led Zeppelin bassist, on bass and keyboards. They released only one self-titled album under the band name and toured together that year

THE DESERT SESSIONS – The collective created by Homme released a long series of recordings from 1997 to 2019. Many big names have participated in the sessions over the years, from Pj Harvey to Mark Lanegan and musicians from other groups. Several songs also ended up on Queens of the Stone Age albums
