Kobo presents the new Elipsa 2E: in addition to reading you can write

An e-book reader with a digital pen for reading, writing, taking notes. We are talking about the new Kobo Elipsa 2E, a device created with eco-sustainable materials designed, they explain to us, all internally in Kobo “as a new cutting-edge tool for reading and writing”. We used it practically every day for about two months, here’s how our test went.

The main features

Kobo Elipsa 2E is a very light device (weighing just under 400 grams) built with 85 percent recycled plastic (including – according to Kobo – 10 percent of plastic intercepted before arriving in the oceans). On the back it has a texture that allows the product to remain firmly in the hands when we read. The highlight is obviously the display: it is a 10.3-inch monochromatic anti-glare e-ink touchscreen (capable of displaying grayscale) equipped with ComfortLight PRO technology to reduce blue light and visual fatigue. In terms of memory, we find 32 gigabytes of storage space and a long-lasting battery that allowed us to read and take notes for about two weeks without ever having to recharge. There is also Bluetooth for connecting headphones and listening to audiobooks. Among other features, some games and pastimes (sudoku, solitaire, anagrams) and a browser in beta (still very immature, in our opinion).

The reading experience

Reading books on Elipsa 2E is a great experience and the characters appear very sharp on the screen; the screen refresh mode is also really good. The display is backlit and – by activating the Natural Light option – the screen lighting is adjusted according to the time, reducing blue light and thus helping to relax and sleep better (among other things, it is possible to set the time we usually go to bed). In our tests we can confirm that we have read several books and PDFs without feeling eye fatigue. The options menu is very complete, which allows you to set the dark mode, define the font size, font type, line spacing and margins. Just as the store where it is possible to find and buy books is very complete and for each book read the description, the evaluation of other readers, download a preview, read the reviews and discover similar books. In our test we found browsing in the store a little slow at times, nothing – we imagine – that cannot be solved with a subsequent software update. To protect the product, Kobo also offers a SleepCover, made of 97 percent recycled plastic, available in black and equipped with a magnetic design that easily attaches to the device while also protecting the Stylus with a dedicated housing.

The writing experience

Kobo Elipsa 2E is sold together with a pen, the Kobo Stylus 2, which allows you to create and organize notes and memos and also export them through some cloud services. Using the pen it is possible to highlight the text of the books, take notes on the PDFs and of course write on blank pages or, at the user’s choice, with lines, squares, to-do lists and so on. The pressure sensitivity is very good, sometimes thanks to the low latency it seems to write with a normal pen on a normal sheet of paper. Through the convenient menu it is possible to choose whether to simulate a ballpoint pen, a fountain pen, a calligraphic pen, a brush or a highlighter and choose size and tone. Also very useful is the digital eraser installed on the back of the pen which, resting on the Elipsa 2E, erases what we have written. The pen attaches magnetically to the e-book reader and is powered via USB-C.

Our experience, availability and prices

We found the Kobo Elipsa 2E to be an excellent e-book reader (it supports practically all the most common formats: EPUB, EPUB3, PDF, FlePub and MOBI), very comfortable to read both at home and, for example, on public transport on the go at work or at the beach. Also useful is the ability to take notes on books, PDFs or blank sheets. While it is possible to import personal books or PDFs or PDFs purchased from other stores through the cloud, it is not possible to listen to audiobooks purchased in other stores but only those purchased in the Kobo store. In terms of prices, the Kobo Elipsa 2E including the pen is sold at a price of 400 euros (a price that is correct in our opinion); the SleepCover is instead sold separately at the price of 70 euros.
