Lana Del Rey has announced the arrival of a new album, which will be released in September 2024 to amaze the audience of the American singer-songwriter, poet and model with a turn towards a genre different from the pop and indie to which we were accustomed. The new album, in fact, will be country, with a title that has already been announced in the last few hours: Period.
This will be his fourth album in just three and a half years, and five years after the lucky meeting he had with Jack Antonoff, the producer who is once again behind this new recording effort.
We remind you that, in addition to the actual records, Lana Del Rey also produced the audiobook Violet Bent Backwards over the Grass of 2020.
Del Ray has nine top 10 appearances on the Billboard 200, including two No. 1s, with Ultraviolence of 2014 and Lust for Life of 2017.
The star made the announcement of his next album Period at the Billboard x NMPA Songwriter Awards on Wednesday 31 January 2024, on the occasion of the award ceremony for the most deserving songwriters held in Los Angeles.
While paying tribute from the stage to Jack Antonoff – in the running to become the second creative to win the Grammy for producer of the year three years in a row, joining Babyface – Del Rey revealed details of her next project.
Lana Del Rey: “The music industry is going country”
“If you haven’t already noticed from our winners and our performers, the music industry is going country,” Lana Del Rey said on stage at the Billboard x NMPA Songwriter Awards.
“We’re heading towards country. Is happening. That’s why Jack Antonoff has followed me to Muscle Shoals, Nashville, Mississippi, for the last four years,” he added.
The result of this musical journey is a new album out in September, entitled Period. This is his tenth studio album, which follows Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd of 2023, which reached position no. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Jack Antonoff, the producer behind Lana Del Rey’s new country album
Antonoff is one of the most awarded, famous and sought-after producers of the seven world-renowned producers.
He has already won eight Grammy Awards and has six more opportunities to add to that collection with new awards at the 66th annual Grammys, scheduled for this Sunday, February 4, in Los Angeles, where Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd by Lana Del Rey and Midnights by Taylor Swift (both records that make use of her work) are in the running for several awards.
Being named producer of the year five years in a row, Lana Del Rey points out, is “anything but luck.” The singer-songwriter went on to say that Antonoff was born under one of those talented, lucky musical stars, and as a producer and creative, he can pretty much do anything.
The singer-songwriter recounted her first meeting with Antonoff
Del Rey recounted her first meeting with Antonoff. It happened at one of Clive Davis’ legendary pre-Grammy parties.
It was 2018, a particularly “interesting” night, she explains, having just broken up with a boyfriend, just a few days before the biggest night in the recording industry, which she was attending for the second time in her life.
The star explained on stage at the Billboard x NMPA Songwriter Awards that she had an instant friendship with Jack Antonoff, noting that he is “everyone’s friend.” This friendship then led to a collaboration in the studio, where five songs were created in a single day.
Lana Del Rey went on to say that Antonoff’s chord progressions are “timeless, instantly classic”. And his “instincts are unique. And apparently award-winning.” She adds that a music man like that is a very rare thing, “one in a million”.
After all, the American singer-songwriter owes a lot to her friend and producer, given that the musical collaboration with Antonoff is giving her great satisfaction, both in terms of recognition and in terms of earnings.
