Lazio-Roma 1-0, Italian Cup derby: what happened

The derby valid for the quarter-finals

Lazio beats Roma 1-0 today 10 January 2024 in the derby valid for the quarter-finals of the 2023-2024 Italian Cup. Zaccagni goal from a penalty.

The match

Roma manages possession of the ball in the opening stages. The Giallorossi look for space to sink, Lazio remains collected to protect their own area: Paredes tries from outside, Guendouzi blocks. The Biancocelesti get moving with Zaccagni’s first acceleration and Castellanos looks for the first shot from outside after an incorrect Giallorossi disengagement: ball deflected for a corner. The first quarter of an hour, between repeated errors, slipped away without any real opportunities. In the 18th minute, first chance for Dybala on a free kick: the barrier intercepts.

A jolt in the 24th minute with Lazzari’s personal initiative, percussion and shot but Rui Patricio must not intervene. In the second half of the first half literally nothing happens. The goalkeepers stand by and watch, not even by dissecting the match can a real opportunity be found. The record shows a descent by Lazzari, neutralized by Mancini, and a couple of ‘almost flashes’ by Dybala.

At the start of recovery, the turning point. Huijsen knocks out Castellanos, penalty for Lazio after examining the images at VAR. Zaccagni makes no mistake from the spot, 1-0. Roma, without the injured Dybala, skidded fearfully and risked collapsing: Vecino twice had the ball to double between the 56th and 58th minutes. Roma’s reaction is nervous and produces essentially nothing until the 86th minute, when Belotti calls on Mandas to make the first real save of the evening. The climate becomes incandescent, the red cards are pouring in: Pedro, Mancini and Azmoun are out. In the tail end of the interminable recovery, Lukaku looks for the wildcard with an overhead kick. Ball out, Lazio wins the derby and flies to the semi-finals.
