According to the Minister of Agriculture, who spoke to the States General on the birth rate, “there is a culture, an Italian ethnicity, what Treccani defines as a cultural-linguistic grouping, which I imagine that in this conference there is a tendency to protect”
“There is an Italian ethnic group to protect”: these were the words expressed by the Minister for Agriculture Francesco Lollobrigida, speaking on the occasion of the States General of the birth rate. The exponent of the Meloni government said: “I think it is clear to everyone that there is no Italian race. It is a false problem to imagine a concept of this nature. However, there is a culture, an Italian ethnic group, what Treccani defines as a group cultural linguistics, which I imagine that in this conference there is a tendency to protect. Because otherwise it wouldn’t make sense”.
Lollobrigida: “Many would like to live in Italy”
Lollobrigida then added: “The population of the world is growing and many of those born in the world would like to come and live in Italy. So why worry about births in Italy? If the answer is to increase the birth rate, it is probably for reasons related to defense of that belonging, to which many are linked, I in particular with pride, to what is Italian culture, to our linguistic lineage, to our way of life”, concluded the minister.
The “Ethnic Replacement” Controversy
A few weeks ago Lollobrigida ended up at the center of the controversy, after stating that “we cannot surrender to the idea of ethnic replacement: Italians have fewer children, so we replace them with someone else. That’s not the way.” The leader of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein had harshly replied to the Minister of Agriculture, according to which Lollobrigida’s words “are disgusting” and “have the flavor of white supremacy”. And from Action to +Europe to Italia Viva, many had criticized the member of the government. “In my words there was no reference to visions far removed from my training”, Lollobrigida later clarified.
