There are about ten words of Maurice Costanzo, who died today at the age of 84, which have become songs. He signed, among others, for Alex Britti, Mino Reitano, Ombretta Colli and Andrea Bocelli but his masterpiece (in textual sharing with Ghigo De Chiara), set to music by the maestro Ennio Morriconeis called If by calling. The voice that made it an immortal song is that of mine. It was 1966. Before this masterpiece he had been the author, together with Giuseppe Bentivoglio of Fantastic. But if 1966 already seems remote to us today, 1958 is another era and another world. The music was composed by Cinico Angelini, historic master of the first Sanremo Festival (WATCH THE SPECIAL), and the voices were those of Johnny Dorelli, Natalino Otto, Gino Latilla and Fred Buscaglione. The last one is from 2012, it’s called Since you left me and was entrusted to Marcella Bella.
The genesis of If by calling
If by calling was born as an acronym of the television variety show Air conditioning and with a different text since in the original idea it was supposed to be the initials of the radio broadcast Great variety. The perplexities arose on the verse Then in the dark your hand suddenly on mine that in a television still subject to censorship it might have appeared too licentious. Maurizio Costanzo solved the problem by playing in the plural Then in the dark your hands suddenly on mine. Mina wanted to record both versions and the original only appeared in the collection Mine Gold 2 of 1999. The central theme is a love that fades without even the possibility of saying the word goodbye.
IF CALLING, THE TEXT
The amazement of the night
wide open on the sea
it surprised us that we were strangers
me and you.
Then in the dark your hands
suddenly on mine,
he grew up too fast
this love of ours.
If by phoning
I could say goodbye
I would call you.
If I seeing you again
I was sure you weren’t suffering
I would see you again.
If looking into your eyes
I could tell you enough
I would watch you.
But I can’t explain to you
that our newborn love
it’s already over.
If by phoning
I wanted to say goodbye
I would call you.
If I seeing you again
I was sure you weren’t suffering
I would see you again.
If looking into your eyes
I could tell you enough
I would watch you.
But I can’t explain to you
that our newborn love
it’s already over
