Meloni and Metsola, the meeting at Palazzo Chigi today: the topics on the agenda

With the meeting at Palazzo Chigi, Metsola concludes a tour that took her to the southern Italian regions from where she launched “a pro-European message”

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will meet the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola today at 1pm at Palazzo Chigi. Among the topics on the agenda are the migrant question and alliances in view of the European elections after the criticisms of Matteo Salvini: in recent days the leader of the League accused Metsola of wanting to “re-propose the mess with the left, which brought Europe to problems today.”

The themes

With the meeting at Palazzo Chigi, Metsola concludes a tour that took her to the southern Italian regions from where she launched “a pro-European message” and invited citizens to vote in response to Matteo Salvini’s attacks. In the next 5 years “solutions on immigration, on the environment, on digital politics” will have to be found, said the Maltese politician, explaining the stakes of the next electoral round. “I am here to make an appeal to Italian citizens to participate in the June elections”, a “pro-European” message, she added from Catanzaro, shortly before moving to Palermo where she focused instead on migrants. The European Parliament will continue to do everything possible to reach an agreement on the new migration and asylum pact by the end of this legislature”, he assured. He also spoke about the agreement between Italy and Albania (“it is also good to talk with third countries” ), as well as the positions to be taken on Ukraine (“we must stand firm in its defense”) and on the conflict in Gaza (“the two-state solution” can guarantee “long-term peace”). All issues that will be addressed even in the face-to-face meeting at Palazzo Chigi. And on which there is full agreement despite the fact that Meloni and Metsola belong to two different European political families, which the conservatives of Ecr, of which the prime minister is still president, supported for leadership of the European Parliament at the beginning of 2022.
