The president of Copasir Guerini: “It is a priority to act so that similar circumstances are not repeated in the future”

“In Ukraine there is a lot of tiredness on all sides and the moment is approaching when everyone will understand that we need a way out.” Thus Giorgia Meloni, victim of a telephone prank orchestrated by the Russian comedian duo Vovan and Lexus, alias Vladimir Kuznetsov and Aleksej Stolyarov. The Canadian online platform Rumble published the recording of the dialogue dating back to September 18, when the prime minister was put in contact, through the Office of the Diplomatic Counselor, with one of the two comedians who posed as the leader of the African Union . During the conversation Meloni commented on Kiev’s counteroffensive which “is not going as expected and has not changed the fate of the conflict”. And on immigration you criticized Brussels’ attitude for “leaving Italy alone”.

Palazzo Chigi’s response

In a note, the Presidency of the Council expressed “regret” for the trap set for Meloni by the two Russian comedians put in contact with her through the Office of the Diplomatic Counselor. “The Office of the Diplomatic Advisor to the President of the Council of Ministers regrets having been misled by an impostor who posed as the President of the African Union Commission and who was put in telephone contact with President Meloni. The episode occurred on September 18th in the context of the intense commitment developed in those hours by President Meloni to strengthen relations with the African leaders with whom she had important meetings on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly between the 19th and on 21 September”, reads the note from Palazzo Chigi. Government sources then added: despite the attempt to make her say “uncomfortable” phrases, Meloni essentially reiterated the positions taken by the government, albeit in the usual tones of extreme formal courtesy that are expressed in conversations with foreign institutional representatives. The Prime Minister, the same sources continue, despite the provocations, confirmed her full support for Ukraine and the Italian policies to combat illegal immigration.

Guerini: “Act so that similar circumstances do not repeat themselves in the future”

The president of Copasir Lorenzo Guerini also spoke on the issue. “As soon as the news came out, I had a telephone conversation with the delegated Authority, Alfredo Mantovano, who usefully and adequately informed me of what happened. Net of the legitimate considerations that anyone can formulate on the episode, it is a priority to act so that similar circumstances are not repeated in the future, aware that they can be considered, among various hypotheses, also as activities with malicious purposes and which therefore require the utmost attention”, he said.
