The eighteenth edition of the Rome Film Festival (18-29 October) will dedicate a tribute to Michel Gondry, the brilliant French director and screenwriter who was awarded the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for his 2004 film entitled Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (in Italian translated – mercilessly – as If you leave me I delete you).
The film festival will be inaugurated by the new work of the French filmmaker, Le Livre des solutions (The solution book), which will be presented on Sunday 22 October at 8pm at the Palladium Theatre.
Gondry is an eclectic and volcanic artist. Before dedicating himself to the seventh art, he put his talent at the service of video clips and commercials, transforming everything he touched into pure poetry.
From video clips for Björk, Daft Punk and Lenny Kravitz, among others, to the unforgettable commercial for the airline Air France (where the plane in the sky magically replaces the needle of a record player), Michel Gondry is the Wes Anderson not of pastel colors and obsessive-compulsive symmetries but rather of pure poetry.
The Book of Solutions, the new Gondry film that arrives after 8 years of hiatus
There is great anticipation for Gondry’s new work, The solution book, especially because it comes after a long break that the director and screenwriter took from the big screen. In fact, his penultimate film dates back to eight years ago, released in 2015 with The solution book It’s an unpredictable and wild comedy.
It presents itself as a film “about cinema” but also a parable about unbridled creativity and its unknowns, which opens up to all fields of art and human creation, from drawing, to animation, to music, also wringing out the pay attention to short audiovisual forms.
The film will be released in Italian cinemas on November 1st
Michel Gondry’s new film, The solution book, will be released in Italian cinemas on Wednesday 1 November. It will be distributed by I Wonder Pictures in collaboration with Unipol Biografilm Collection.
On Monday 23 October at 3pm at the Casa del Cinema the public will be able to attend the screening of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (If you leave me I delete you), Gondry’s cult film which won him the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay together with Charlie Kaufman and Pierre Bismuth. It is a reflection on the fleeting nature and utopias of love, suspended between comedy and melodrama.
The documentary In Bed with Gondry
On Tuesday 24 October at 4.00 pm the Sala Sinopoli will host the world premiere of In Bed with Gondry (In bed with Michel Gondry) by François Nemeta, the second documentary that the historic collaborator dedicates to the director after Michel Gondry, Do It Yourselfpresented this year at the Venice Film Festival.
In Bed with Gondry is an intimate and personal portrait of the beloved French filmmaker. Over the course of a sleepless night, Gondry discusses his influences, his dreams, his nightmares and reveals the secrets of his creative process, one of the most original in the world. The director will be in the room to meet the spectators.
The tribute to Gondry will end on Sunday 29 October at 11.30, when the filmmaker will take the stage in the Sala Petrassi for a masterclass with the audience of the Rome Film Festival, hosted by the writer Manlio Castagna.
