Peak in landings in the last three days

The landings of migrants in Italy continue. According to the data, updated by the Interior Ministry at 8 this morning, they are 123,863 arrivals in Italy since the beginning of the year. In the last three days there was a peak of 8,141 disembarkations.

From 10 June 2022 to 31 August 2023, against a commitment to transfer 8,289 migrants, 1,159 actually left Italy from Italy to the 13 participating countries. Furthermore, as regards Dubliners, out of 4,015 transfer requests sent from Italy to other EU countries, only 22 migrants were transferred from January 1st to August 31st. In the same period, out of 23,220 transfer requests sent to Italy from other EU countries, 46 were carried out.

The last landing today in Lampedusa, where a newborn baby drowned. The child’s mother, who is still a minor, is at the Lampedusa hotspot, where she is supported by psychologists. She should be transferred as soon as possible to a facility in the province of Agrigento. According to what emerges, the boat with the child on board would have capsized because the occupants moved when they saw the Coast Guard patrol boat arriving. The other migrants were recovered by the Coast Guard. The newborn’s body was taken to the cemetery mortuary.
