Migrants, Meloni: “It is urgent to implement EU flow management”

Premier sees UN refugee commissioner: “Structural interventions and collaboration with African countries”

The Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, met this afternoon with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi. Meloni, reads a note from Palazzo Chigi, confirmed the appreciation of the Italian government for the work of the High Commissioner in favor of the protection and well-being of refugees and underlined the excellent collaboration of Unhcr with Italy especially in Libya and in the Sahel and in the creation of humanitarian corridors. He also reiterated the need to overcome an ideological approach that confuses the legitimate protection to be ensured for refugees with policies towards economic migrants, confirming the Government’s commitment to urgently implement a European management of migratory flows that includes structural interventions and a collaboration with African countries.

High Commissioner Grandi thanked Italy for the constant support it has given to UNHCR and shared the importance of ensuring European management of migration flows with strategic investments in Africa.

Furthermore, during the meeting, “reflections were shared on the need to find a path towards peace as soon as possible” in Ukraine and “to put an end to the suffering of the population and proceed with the reconstruction of the country”.
