The Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi went on a mission today to Tunis. During the visit, the minister participated in a bilateral meeting with his Tunisian counterpart Kamel Fekih. The owner of the interior ministry then had a meeting with the president of the Tunisian republic Kais Saied. The visit focused on topics such as partnership and cooperation in the fight against irregular migration, as well as support for the country’s reform process

As stated in Press release released at the end of the visit, “during the meetings held today at Tunis it has been underlined several times how the relations between the two governments are solid, based on loyal collaboration and sharing of views. Italy is well aware that Tunisia is doing a great deal to block departures and fight the traffickerswhich put the lives of migrants and the very safety of rescuers at serious risk”

There was then talk of joint programs of “voluntary repatriation assisted by the Tunisia to the migrants’ countries of origin. The support from Italy to the government of Tunis for the control of land and sea borders “is concrete and is being implemented through plans for technical assistance and supplies”. Furthermore, the statement continues, Italy is also committed to improving the conditions and life prospects of the younger population and to activating legal migration channels for education/work and for vulnerable people in need of international protection”.
