The counting of votes has begun in Imperia where five candidates compete for the municipal elections. Being a municipality with more than 15 thousand inhabitants, for the election of the mayor in the first round it is necessary to obtain at least an absolute majority, 50%+1. With 17 out of 44 sections scrutinized, the centre-right candidate Claudio Scajola is ahead with 61.71% of the votes. Ivan Bracco, candidate of the Democratic Party and the Green/Left Alliance has instead received 22.34% so far.

The turnout

In Liguria, overall, 56.08% of eligible voters voted, a decrease compared to the previous administrations when 60.42% had voted. In Imperia (19,959 voters out of 34,370 eligible) 58.07% voted against 62.79% in the last administrative elections. The drop in voter turnout is generalized: in Sestri Levante (9,136 voters out of 16,995 eligible) 53.76% voted compared to the previous administrations when 59.41% had voted. In Sarzana (11,526 voters out of 18,383 entitled) the highest figure: 62.46% voted against 64.40% in the previous administrations. Finally, in Ventimiglia (11,202 voters out of 21,457 eligible) 52.21% voted against 57.37% in the last administrative elections.

Who are the candidates

There are five candidates for Imperia. The outgoing mayor, former minister Claudio Scajola, runs for the centre-right and is supported by the civic lists Avanti con Scajola, Insieme con Scajola and Prima Imperia. Ivan Bracco is challenging him with the support of the Democratic Party, the Left Green Alliance and the Imperia Rinasce list. Enrico Lauretti, engineer and former official of the Province is supported by the Open Society civic list. Stefano Semeria, outgoing city councilor, is the candidate of the Movimento 5 Stelle. Luciano Zarbano is also running for mayor, supported by the Imperia civic list without masters.
