We recall that Josephine was the first wife of Napoleon I, followed by his second wife Maria Luisa of Habsburg-Lorraine, by whom the emperor had his only legitimate child. Napoleon and his first wife Josephine were crowned emperor and empress of the French in 1804 in the cathedral of Notre-Dame but when it became clear that, due to questions of age, she could not give an heir to Napoleon, the emperor accepted the exhortation of his advisers: he started the procedures for the declaration of nullity of the marriage, recognized by the ecclesiastical court of the Parisian archdiocese on 11 January 1810).

Ridley Scott: ‘Napoleon is a man who has always fascinated me’

Director Ridley Scott talked about his film project during a recent interview, explaining the reasons that led him to make a film about Napoleon.
“Napoleon is a man who has always fascinated me. He came from nowhere to rule everything, but all the while he was waging a romantic war with his adulterous wife Josephine. He conquered the world to try to win her love for him, and when he couldn’t, he conquered it to destroy her. No actor could ever embody Napoleon better than Joaquin,” said Ridley Scott.

“No one as Napoleon would ever surpass Joaquin Phoenix,” says the director

The British filmmaker never misses an opportunity to praise his leading actor, that Joaquin Phoenix who to define a chapeau talent is an understatement.

Talking to the magazine Empire, Ridley Scott said the following: “Joaquin is as far from conventional as you can get. Not deliberately, but by intuition. That’s what he does and he does it well. If something bothers him, he will let you know. He made Napoleon special by constantly questioning himself. With Joaquin, you have to rewrite the fucking movie because he’s uncomfortable. And this happened with Napoleon. We unpacked the film to help it focus on who Bonaparte was. I had to respect that, because what he said was incredibly constructive. He made it bigger and better,” Ridley Scott pointed out.

So Phoenix is not a “simple” interpreter of something that others write to him: he is also an active part in the writing and elaboration of the character, which makes him an actor with a capital A.
