Natural cosmetics, in 2022 almost 3 billion euros of consumption

The numbers and trends of the segment, surveyed by Cosmetica Italia, were presented today in Bari

With almost 3 billion euros of consumption (+9% on 2021), the world of natural and sustainable cosmetics represents a quarter of the purchases of cosmetics in our country. The numbers and trends of the segment, surveyed by Cosmetica Italia, the national association of cosmetic companies, were presented today in Bari in a round table organized at Villa de Grecis, by Sana, BolognaFiere and L’Erborista magazine.

“Across the different distribution channels, the consumer’s attention towards cosmetics with natural and sustainable connotations is now consolidated – highlighted Laura Pedrini, president of the Cosmetics Group Erboristeria of Cosmetica Italia – Just think that in 2022 the consumption of this category represented a quarter of total cosmetics purchases in Italy, for a value of around 2.9 billion euros, up 9% compared to 2021. An attention also confirmed by the analysis of product launches on the Italian market: cosmetics with claims linked to the concepts of naturalness and sustainability accounted for 62% of launches recorded in 2022, an increasing share which in 2019 was 57%”.

For Sergio Fontana, president of Confindustria Bari and Bat, “the cosmetics industry is a spearhead of Italian manufacturing and, even if Lombardy remains the first region for concentration of cosmetics companies (with over 55% of the sector, according to data from Cosmetica Italia), Puglia, which has only 0.8% of national cosmetic companies, is establishing itself due to the presence of successful SMEs, closely linked to the territory and with highly specialized and niche products, which they are also distinguishing themselves in the organic segment. I am sure that, by strengthening collaborations with our research system, with the University and Polytechnic of Bari, and with the rest of the supply chain, the Apulian cosmetics industry will be able to achieve ever greater results”.

The round table was opened by Claudia Castello, exhibition manager of Sana, the international organic and natural exhibition to be held at BolognaFiere, in an exclusively B2B version, from Thursday 7 to Sunday 10 September 2023.

“Sana is an event divided into three product sectors, Organic&Natural Food, Care&Beauty and Green Lifestyle, and cosmetics with natural and sustainable connotations represent the main and preponderant one. At the last edition of the Show, 41% of specialized visitors consisted of profiles interested in this world: herbalists, pharmacists and parapharmacists, homeopathic doctors. A figure that testifies to the centrality of the natural and sustainable cosmetics sector for operators. The great attention that Sana dedicates to the sector is also supported by the Cosmetics Group Erboristeria of Cosmetica Italia Furthermore, in collaboration with the Tecniche Nuove Group and, in particular, with the magazine L’Erborista, Sana 2023 will host a training and information area entitled La Via delle Erbe”, explained Castello.

More details about The Path of Herbs they arrived from Mariella Di Stefano, scientific director of L’Erborista: “We will propose a 360° journey into the world of medicinal herbs and their health applications. The core of the event, divided into three full-time days, consists of seven master classes with high scientific and professional value held by phytotherapy and herbal medicine experts, academics and opinion leaders in the sector, aimed at herbalists and operators who deal with health and well-being. The protagonists of this edition are medicinal herbs and plants that bear white flowers”.
