‘Ndrangheta, fugitive since 2006 arrested in France: accused of double murder

The arrest in Sant’Etienne, Edgardo Greco had been a fugitive for 17 years

Has been arrested in Sant’Etienne, France, Edgardo Greco, who had been on the run for over 17 years or since 10 October 2006when he escaped the execution of the precautionary measure in prison, issued by the district investigating judge of Catanzaro, in the context of the maxi “Missing” trial which reconstructed some of the bloody events that characterized the bloody clash in the early 1990s between the “Pino-Sena” clan and the “Perna – Pranno” clan.

The European arrest warrant issued by the Attorney General at the Court of Appeal of Catanzaro on 16 May 2014, in relation to the prison order dated 4 April 2014, for the execution of the life sentence in relation to the double murder of Stefano and Giuseppe Bartolomeo, which took place in Cosenza on 5 January 1991, and the attempted murder of E. M. which took place in Cosenza on 21 July 1991matured in the context of the mafia war, between the clan defined as “Pino-Sena” and the one defined as “Perna-Pranno”, which bloodied the Cosenza area in the early 90s.

As the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of Catanzaro and the General Prosecutor of Catanzaro inform in a note, Greco was identified in Sant’Etienne at the end of an investigation, coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of Catanzaro, in specific proceedings concerning the procured non-compliance with the sentence, and carried out by the carabinieri of the operational department-Investigative Nucleus of Cosenza, who in the final phase acted together with the personnel of the Italian and French units to be captured (Fast) and the I-Can Unit of the Scip of the Ministry of Indoor.

As reconstructed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of Catanzaro and the General Prosecutor’s Office of Catanzaro, Greco, considered “affiliated to the ‘ndrina Perna-Pranno hegemonic in Cosenza and its province, as ascertained in the outcome of the ‘Garden’ proceeding, concluded at the end of the 90s, following the outcome of the various levels of judgment of the maxi ‘Missing’ trial, he was held jointly responsible for the ambush that claimed the lives of the brothers Stefano and Giuseppe Bartolomeo on 5 January 1991”. The two brothers, the investigators recall, “ambited for greater ‘autonomy’ and consideration within the Cosche Cosenza” and were “killed with blows of a bar”, inside a fish market and their bodies were made to disappear and were not never found again.

The investigative activity, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Catanzaro – District Anti-Mafia Directorate, and carried out by the Carabinieri of the Operational Department-Investigative Unit of Cosenza, was launched in December 2019, and developed through targeted investigations aimed at reconstructing the network of support on which Greco could count, thus going back to the presence of the fugitive in France in Sant’Etienne.
