Another Italian wounded, a suspect arrested while threatening third person

An Italian Columbia University student, Davide Giri, was killed in a stabbing that took place last night in New York. The Daily Beast reports this, citing the confirmation of the dean of Colombia University, Lee Bollinger.

“With great pain I am writing to share the tragic news that Davide Giri, a doctoral student at the School of Engineering and Applied Science, was killed in a violent attack near the campus last night,” he wrote in an email sent to students of the prestigious New York university. According to the website, another Italian – Robert Malastina – is injured.

A 25-year-old was in handcuffs on probation after a 2013 conviction for assault. This was reported by the New York Daily News, specifying that the injured Italian tourist, rushed to hospital, is in stable condition. A Columbia student who witnessed the assault, reports the Daily Beast, said he saw the suspect run after Malastina and start stabbing him in the back and chest as the victim called for help.
