Numismatics: from Davis cup to ‘Albachiara’ and Mennea, new collection arrives


From Pietro Mennea to the Davis Cup, from Pesaro capital of culture 2024 to the Amerigo Vespucci ship, from Rita Levi Montalcini to Vasco Rossi’s ‘Albachiara’, from Ducati to koalas. The new 2024 numismatic collection arrives, presented by the Minister of Economy, Giancarlo Giorgetti and the CEO of the Polygraphic Institute and the State Mint, Francesco Soro. Today’s ceremony ”represents a parade of artistic excellence” which ”tell the history of our country and its anniversaries”, states the Minister of Economy, Giancarlo Giorgetti. ”Through these coins, true works of art, small only in size, the tradition of Italian craftsmanship is also passed down”.

And in this context, the State Mint, according to the minister, ”is a unique establishment of its kind” because ”it makes Italian coins among the most beautiful and sought after in the world”. ”These coins represent Italy in the world”. ”They are not just metal objects” but in this collection there are ”pieces of history, artistic beauties and discoveries”.

For Soro ”this is a commercial product that must sell and must produce value for us and above all for our shareholder, who is the Minister of Economy”. ”It is a true example of Made in Italy that we cultivate and want to enhance more and more in the coming years”. The CEO thanks ”the engraving artists for the work done. It is an important thank you because each of these objects is born from work that is extraordinary to see”. Furthermore, ”I would like to thank the technical-artistic commission because they are adapting well to this attempt to relaunch the Mint, which increasingly intersects the passions of Italians with the passion for numismatics, and they are doing it with us, day after day , with an extraordinary job”.

The 2024 collection includes 19 themes. The role of the institutions is celebrated in the 2 euro and 5 euro silver coin commemorating the ‘250th anniversary of the foundation of the financial police force’ and by the 5 euro silver coin dedicated to the ‘around the world 2023-2025 of the ship Amerigo Vespucci’, historic navy training ship. Another commemorative 2 euro coin, also intended for ordinary circulation, is dedicated to Rita Levi Montalcini, paying homage to the scientist, the only Italian woman to have received the Nobel Prize for Medicine.

Also a 5 euro silver coin, however, commemorates the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Consob, the national commission for companies and the stock exchange, an important player in safeguarding the Italian financial system and protecting investors. To celebrate entrepreneurial excellence, a tribute to the history of Italian motorcycling, 3 silver coins: a journey which, starting from the majesty of the historic Ducati factory in Borgo Panigale inaugurated in 1926, tells the story of the symbolic models of the Bolognese company.

The coin is dedicated to the value of sport, the first with an elliptical shape, which celebrates the ‘Rome 2024 European athletics championships’, remembering the athlete Pietro Mennea, world record holder nicknamed The Arrow of the South. The new series dedicated to Italian songs is inaugurated by ‘Albachiara’ by Vasco Rossi, among the songs most loved by Italians. Three mintages for the comic series respectively dedicated to Jak Mandolino, Cocco Bill and Pop Corn, creations of the pencil of Benito Jacovitti, one of the most revolutionary and influential cartoonists of the second half of the twentieth century.

The 800 years of the University of Naples Federico II, the 25th anniversary of the foundation of the Italian Federation of Rare Diseases and the 150th anniversary of the birth of Guglielmo Marconi and 100 years since the first radio broadcast in Italy, will be celebrated respectively by a coin with a nominal value of 5 euros in silver.
