Numismatics: Ipzs, coin celebrates 100 years of birth of Italo Calvino

A silver coin with a nominal value of 5 euros, issued today by the Ministry of Economy and Finance and minted by the State Printing and Mint Institute, celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Italo Calvino. A tribute to one of the most important and beloved Italian writers of the second half of the twentieth century. Novelist, writer, journalist, but also with great political and civil commitment, Calvino was one of the greatest Italian authors whose stories inspired theatre, cinema and the arts. The coin created by the engraver artist of the State Mint, Antonio Vecchio, is part of the divisional series in 9 Uncirculated pieces, with a circulation of 9,000 specimens. On the obverse, the portrait of Italo Calvino. On the left, ‘1923-2023’, respectively the date of birth of the writer and the date of issue of the coin. Around, the writings “Repubblica Italiana” and “Italo Calvino”.

On the reverse, the depiction of a scene taken from the 1957 novel “The Baron in the Trees” by Italo Calvino, with the two protagonists Cosimo and Violante in the foreground against a profile of the Ligurian coast, in particular Sanremo, a city very dear to the writer.
