Omicron variant, two cases in the Marche: in Ancona and Ascoli Piceno

Councilor Saltamartini: “Arrival was predictable, now it is necessary to proceed with sequencing and tracing”

First two cases of Omicron variant identified by the Virology laboratory of the Ospedali Riuniti of Ancona in two samples from one from the province of Ancona and one from the province of Ascoli Piceno. They are two men. Altogether 15 samples had been sequenced today. The two swabs were instead carried out on Friday. Now the tracing has started to identify the close contacts of the two subjects. The first case of Omicron in the Marche had been certified by the Spallanzani Institute in Rome: it was a woman from Tolentino who arrived in Italy from South Africa on an Ethiopian Airlines flight.

“The arrival of the Omicron variant in the Marche region was inevitable – said the councilor for health Filippo Saltamartini – it is important to continue with the vaccination campaign because the third dose has been shown to give a very important antibody response, especially against the variants, certainly higher than the first two. It is no coincidence that the infections have risen in the last month, but the number of hospitalized remains much lower than a year ago “.
