Aida was commissioned by Ismail Pasha, Viceroy of Egypt. Composed on a libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni, who develops a plot sketched in French by Camille du Locle on the recommendation of the archaeologist Auguste Mariette, the opera was staged for the first time on December 24, 1871 in the Egyptian capital. Six weeks later, on February 8, 1872, it had its first performance in Italy, at La Scala in Milan. The first performance at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome dates back to 8 October 1881
