Oscar 2024, records and curiosities of this edition

Anatomy of a fall the (announced) revelation is confirmed. Scorsese becomes the living director with the most nominations and Robert De Niro could win 50 years after The Godfather

I captain it is the 33rd Italian film nominated for the Oscar for Best International Film (formerly foreign film). For Matteo Garrone it is the first time in the race. If he were to transform the nomination into a statuette, as the specialized website Cinematografo.it underlines, he would become the 15th Italian in the history of the Academy, consolidating our primacy in the category. The last Italian film to win was, ten years ago, The Great Beauty by Paolo Sorrentino; the last candidate, in 2022, È la mano di Dio, also by Sorrentino.

Perfect Days It is Wim Wenders’ first film competing for the International Film Oscar. The German master, 79 years old next August, had received three nominations for Best Documentary (2000 with Buena Vista Social Club, 2012 with Pina and 2015 with The Salt of the Earth).

For the second year in a row, the Palme d’Or winner is nominated for the Oscar for best film: let’s talk about Anatomy of a fall (whose success we had predicted), which was not selected by France for Best International Film (the designated The Taste of Thing was left out) and collected 5 nominations, all heavy. Among these, the one for Best Director went to Justine Triet (first French woman, ninth overall after Jean Renoir, Claude Lelouch, François Truffaut, Edouard Molinaro, Louis Malle, Michel Hazanavicius and the naturalized Costa-Gavras and Roman Polanski, second European after Lina Wertmuller) and Best Actress Sandra Hüller (third after Marlene Dietrich and Luise Rainer).

Poor creatures! he is the fifth Golden Lion since 2017 to receive the nomination for the Oscar for Best Film and with 11 nominations he is in second place after frontrunner Oppenheimer (13). For Yorgos Lanthimos it is the second attempt to win the directing prize: if he wins he would be the first of Greek origins.

Thanks to Killers of the Flower Moon (10), Martin Scorsese he surpasses Steven Spielberg to become the active director with the highest number of nominations (ten, the first in 1980 with Raging Bull; he only has one statuette in his cabinet for The Departed, 2006). This year he is also the only American in the five (the others, in addition to the aforementioned Lanthimos and Triet, are the British Jonathan Glazer and Christopher Nolan). Its protagonist, Lily Gladstone, becomes the first Native American in the running for the Oscar for Best Actress. And Robert De Niro gets the ninth nomination of his career, the eighth for his performance: he won his first Oscar for best supporting actor exactly half a century ago with The Godfather – Part II.

Despite the 8 nominations, Barbie the two that would have sealed the triumph are missing: best director for Greta Gerwig (in the running for the non-original screenplay) and best actress for Margot Robbie (who we will still see on the red carpet as the film’s producer).

John Williams confirms himself as a man of records: the legendary composer, already winner of five Oscars, obtains nomination number 54 thanks to Indiana Jones and the Quadrant of Destiny, consolidating his absolute record as the most nominated living individual in the history of the Academy (better than him alone Walt Disney with 59).

Jodie Foster, already winner of two Oscars and in the running as a supporting role for Nyad, obtains the fifth nomination in forty-seven years, twenty-nine years after the last attempt. Annette Bening, protagonist of Nyad, who has never been awarded until now, is attempting to win the statuette for the fifth time in thirty-three years. After Ian McKellen, Colman Domingo, competing with the biopic Rustin, is the second openly homosexual actor to receive the nomination in ninety-six editions. All three star in Netflix films, which collected 17 nominations also thanks to Maestro, American Simphony, May December, Nimona and the shorts The After and The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. Apple, on the other hand, gets 13 but with only two titles, Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon.
