Osimhen, Naples: “I never wanted to offend the player with the videos”

The club is trying to mend the rift with the striker

Napoli is trying to mend the rift with Victor Osimhen and close the case linked to the videos published on TikTok. “Calcio Napoli, in order to avoid any exploitation on the subject, specifies that it never intended to offend or make fun of Victor Osimhen, the club’s technical asset. To demonstrate this, during the summer training camp, the Club firmly rejected any offer received for the attacker’s transfer abroad”, the Italian champion club announced in a statement.

Naples, the explanation: but there are no excuses for Osimhen

“It represents a fact of common experience that on social media, in particular on TikTok, expressive language has always been created with lightness and creativity, without having had, in the case in which Osimhen was the protagonist, any intention of mockery or derision – continues the statement from the Italian club. However, if Victor had perceived any offense towards him, it was foreign to any will of the club.”

Osimhen and the video storm, what happened

On Tuesday 26 September, Napoli published and then removed a video which was ironic about the penalty Osimhen won and missed in the 0-0 draw in Bologna last Sunday. In the clip, the center forward was paired with a ‘cartoon-like’ voice: Osimhen asks for the penalty, gets it and misses it. Another video bounces on social media in which the Nigerian attacker is the backdrop to a refrain that compares him to a coconut. This is a trend (#coconut) in vogue these days on Chinese social media. It consists of combining your images with the song “I’m a coconut” via the platform’s video editing app.

“What happened on Napoli’s official profile on the TikTok platform is not acceptable. A video mocking Victor was first made public and then, but now belatedly, deleted”, wrote Roberto Calenda, the player’s agent, on X. ” A serious fact that creates very serious damage to the player and adds to the treatment that the boy is undergoing in the last period between media trials and fake news. We reserve the right to take legal action and any useful initiative to protect Victor Osimhen”, concludes Calendar. The player, who deleted the photos wearing the Napoli shirt from Instagram, took to the pitch regularly yesterday in the 4-1 win against Udinese and also scored.
