Palermo, over three thousand students will march for peace

After a year of war, the day of peace. The Presidium for Peace of Palermo, together with Europe for peace, is launching an event on February 24 – in memory of last year’s Russian invasion on the same day – “to say enough to war”. Over 35 schools in Palermo and the province of all levels will participate in the initiative. More than 3,200 students are expected up to now, but membership is increasing day by day. After the concentration at 8.30 in Piazza Politeama, a procession – which will be opened by a performance by the Wind Orchestra of the Alessandro Scarlatti Conservatory of Music in Palermo – will parade through Via Dante to reach the Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa.

The association “Women’s library and Udi Palermo legal consultancy center” together with other women’s associations, from 3 April 2022, a few weeks after the start of the war in Ukraine, promoted a women’s Presidium in the square every week in Palermo to support the reasons for peace and denounce the use of the logic of violence and force. “War out of history” was the slogan taken from the text by Bertha von Suttner and chosen to characterize the garrison as a sign of opposition to all the wars currently taking place in the world.

In recent months, various schools in Palermo have participated in the Presidium of Women for Peace, through the presence in the square of teachers with their classes, who have brought a creative and reflective contribution (readings, music and songs, theatrical actions) against war. “Out of history war, only peace is a victory”.
