Perugia capital of the doc with PerSo, “Differente. Not indifferent” festival

Nine days of screenings, 50 titles, eight Italian premieres, training for filmmakers with masterclasses and virtual reality documentaries

‘Different. not indifferent ‘this is the claim that summarizes the spirit of PerSo 2022the Perugia Social Film Festival that from 1 to 9 October will make the Umbrian capital a documentary capital: a city, three cinemas, nine days of free admission programming, with five competition categories, over 50 national and international titles and 10 Italian premieres, training for filmmakers with masterclasses and documentaries in virtual reality. The 2022 edition was presented in Rome, at Casa Argentina, where the PerSo will propose a program of 5 films completely dedicated to the recently produced Argentine documentary cinema, which opens on 15 September with the retrospective dedicated to the filmmaker Martín Solá.



Many titles arrived from all over the world selected in the competitions by the artistic direction in the five competitions scheduled. As they explain Luca Ferretti And Giovanni Piperno, artistic directors of the festival: “In recent years, despite the great difficulties due to the lack and uncertainty of funding, we have continued to develop the idea of ​​a ‘container’ Festival, contemporary and multidisciplinary, combining the cinema proposal with events and projects of different nature. The new activities planned for 2022 go in this direction: the Itineranze DOC national artistic residency, the PerSo VR and the Young Jury Award, the increase in the duration of the Festival to 9 days “.

The VIII edition of the Festival will see 5 competition sections in which 8 prizes will be awarded by 6 dedicated juries and an audience prize. In addition, out of competition, screenings and meetings at the Perugia-Capanne prison, project development residence of new authors Itineranze DOC (in collaboration with 5 national festivals), the Young Jury Award for high school students, the PerSo Lab for the training of audience and professionals in the sector and a meeting in collaboration with the Umbria Film Commission. The PerSo VR section dedicated to works in virtual reality, PerSo film reviews at the Argentina House in Rome and at the IIC in Beijing, a focus on Myanmar and a retrospective dedicated to the filmmaker Gianni Serra. Screenings in the original language with double subtitles in Italian and English for a dense edition of events for fans of documentary and author cinema.

This year masterclasses are scheduled in Perugia with Francesca Calvelli (Saturday 2 October), editor of the main films of Marco Bellocchio, Danis Tanović, Francesca Comencini and Saverio Costanzo and of successful series such as Amica Geniale and In Treatment. She was the winner of two David di Donatello, four gold Ciak and five silver ribbons. Ivelise Perniola, university professor, co-director of the magazine Agalma, one of the leading Italian scholars of documentary cinema, author of essays such as The postdocumentary era and Beyond neorealism. Author documentaries and post-war Italian reality. The title of the masterclass is Visual paths in the forest: the representation of wild nature in documentary cinema between ecology and myth. Armando Andria, Alessia Bradoni, Fabrizio Croce – “From an excessive perspective. Antonio Capuano’s cinema ”.

Members of the jury of the Award will be Angelo Loy, filmmaker author of narrative documentaries with a social theme, including Fiumaroli (2000), Pinocchio Nero (2005), Una Scuola Italiana (2010), L’Infedele (2014), Places Comuni (2015) ), Tropic of Chaos (2019). He has been dedicating himself for years to participatory video, as director, teacher and facilitator, for which he has worked in Italy, Kenya, France and Morocco. Aline Hervé, editor, has signed the editing of works by Pietro Marcello, Giovanni Cioni, Paolo Pisanelli, Caterina Borelli and Federica Di Giacomo. PerSo Cinema Italiano has a jury made up of university students of the University of Perugia and of the Alba – Academy of Fine Arts of Perugia. PerSo Short Jail there will be, as usual, the jury of inmates and inmates of the Perugia-Capanne prison that assigns the prize to the best short film. During the Festival, three screenings will be held inside the prison in the presence of the directors and during the year a continuous activity of meetings and projections aimed at the prison population was carried out.
