Pichetto Fratin: “Innovation drives the plastics sector, recycling and recovery are key points”

The Minister of the Environment and Energy Security present at the first of the four days of Plast 2023

“The system of companies working in the plastic and rubber sector is something that characterizes us at a European level and which, naturally, also leads us to pay great attention to innovation. Innovation means increasingly biodegradable plastics, non- dispersion and even greater attention to recycling, an area in which Italy excels”, underlined the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, on the sidelines of the conference ‘Plastic sustainability 5.0: Scenarios and evolutions from production at the end of life’ which was held at the Rho Fiera congress center in Milan on the occasion of the opening of the 19th edition of Plast – the International Exhibition for the Plastics and Rubber Industry – the largest European supply chain event.

“Italy is the European leader in waste recycling – added the minister – but from the point of view of plastic recycling it is still not enough. This will be one of the topics covered by the G7 under the Italian presidency in 2024. The study of a mechanism to avoid the dispersion of plastic in rivers and seas is also fundamental, with a whole series of consequent consequences”.

“We contest the EU regulation on packaging”, which is “generic and ideological. We want a directive that takes into account the peculiarities of the country. Such a generic and ideological mechanism of reuse as a flag, as an alternative to recycling, is absolutely not acceptable and we demonstrate it on the merits, with the contents, methods and technologies that our country has put in place and is implementing”, he said Pichetto Fratin.

With the European Commission “we are currently in an important confrontation. There is a negotiating area that sees us in a firm position, because we cannot accept this type of position”, explained the minister.

The conference on the opening day of the event dedicated to the themes of sustainability, innovation and doing business was attended not only by Minister Pichetto Fratin, but also by the Deputy Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy Valentino Valentini, by the general manager of Ice Maurizio Forte, of the president of Plast Massimo Margaglione and of Guido Guidesi, councilor for economic development of the Lombardy Region.
