Pope: “Celibacy in the Church is a temporary prescription”

Bergoglio: “It is not eternal. There is no contradiction for a priest to be able to get married”

“Celibacy in the Western Church is a temporary prescription, it is not eternal.” This was stated by the Pope in an interview with the Argentine portal Infobae, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of his pontificate. “Actually, in the Catholic Church there are married priests: all of the Eastern rite are married. All. All of the Eastern rite. Here in the Curia we have one, I met him today: he has a wife and a child. There is no there is no contradiction for a priest to be able to get married”, he stressed.

“Celibacy in the Western Church is a temporary prescription: I don’t know if it is resolved one way or another, but it is temporary in that sense. It is not eternal like priestly ordination, which is forever, whether one likes it or not. Whether you leave or not is another matter, but it is forever. Celibacy, on the other hand, is a discipline”, the Pope said.

“Sometimes – added Bergoglio – celibacy can lead you to male chauvinism. A priest who does not know how to work with women is missing something, he is not mature. The Vatican was very male chauvinist, but it is part of the culture, it is nobody’s fault. It’s always been like this.”
