Tomorrow first round of the XCAT world championship
Maurizio Schepici and Mario Petroni, aboard “Tommy One”, conquered the offshore world record on the Fiumicino-Civitavecchia-Fiumicino section, covering a distance of approximately 60 nautical miles in the incredible time of 37 minutes. Crazy times and numbers for the two pilots, who maintained an average speed of 85 knots, with peaks between 95 and 100!
Great satisfaction for Schepici, who achieved the feat of the world record in the city of Fiumicino, where he has lived for several years. «It wasn’t easy to win the goal – he said – especially in the initial part of the route. In fact, towards Fregene, we had to face very long and anomalous waves, which didn’t allow us to go even faster». In the fastest stretch, the one towards Santa Marinella, the Tommy One however reached peaks of 100 knots, recovering precious minutes and managing to sail, despite the swell, with a truly impressive average that allowed the creation of the world record.
«We never gave up – highlighted Petroni – because they wanted so much to accomplish this feat, for which we gave everything. We want to thank all the team that followed us, headed by Martino Cama and, to follow, Tonny, Vinicio and his son. Thanks also to all the sponsors: their support has been invaluable. Heartfelt thanks also to Dr. Armando Fortini, President of the Fiumicino Section of the Italian Naval League». Maurizio Schepici and Mario Petroni received compliments for the record from Raffaele Chiulli (UIM President), Vincenzo Iaconianni (FIM President) and many guests and representatives from the world of sport and entertainment who, in addition to the Tommy One feat, will be able enjoy the show of the XCAT, the queen category of the offshore.
Indeed, tomorrow and Monday 1 May, Fiumicino will be the setting for the opening round of the 2023 XCAT Championship. 9 world-class teams from three continents will take to the water: the outgoing champions of the Italian-Australian 222 Offshore team (Darren Nicholson and Giovanni Carpitella), the Swedes from Swecat (Sebastian Groth and Svenne Jansson), the Emirates from Fazza (Arif Al Zaffain and Nadir Bin Hendi), the Monegasque team Superciccio (Tommaso Polli and Matteo Nicolini), Team GB from the United Kingdom (Scott Williams and Martin Campbell), the Italian Powerboat Team (Andrea Comello and Jan Cees Cortelland), the Q8 Oils team from Kuwait (Abdullatif Al Omani and Bader Al Dousari) and the two Italian Consulbrokers teams (Alfredo Amato, Luca Betti and Vincenzo Mariniello) and HPI Racing Team (Rosario Schiano Di Cola and Giuseppe Schiano Di Cola).
The Fiumicino Grand Prix includes Race 1 on Sunday 30 April at 15:30 and Race 2 on Monday 1 May, again at 15:30. The UIM XCAT World Championship has the authorization of the Italian Powerboat Federation, which has assigned the event to its affiliate Assoservices. The local organization of this tender will instead be the Naval League of Fiumicino of the President Armando Fortini. The organizational costs will be borne by OPTA, the XCAT team association chaired by the Neapolitan champion Alfredo Amato.
