Qatar 2022 World Cup, Portugal-Ghana 3-2: Cristiano Ronaldo record goal

CR7 is the only player to score in 5 World Cup editions

Portugal beat Ghana 3-2 in group H of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, played at Stadium 974 in Doha. The goals of the Lusitanians bear the signature of Cristiano Ronaldo on penalties in the 65th minute, Joao Felix in the 78th minute and Leao in the 80th minute; for the Africans Ayew scored in the 73rd minute and Bukari in the 89th minute. Yet another record for CR7: with today’s goal he becomes the first player in history to score in 5 World Cups. In the standings, the Portuguese lead the group with 3 points, then Uruguay and South Korea with 1 point and Ghana with zero.

THE MATCH – Two-faced match, the first half is one of the most boring of this beginning of the World Cup, with Portugal holding the ball but without creating particular dangers and Ghana, who defend themselves in eleven behind the ball line, managing to keep the Lusitanians from Ati’s goal, except on one occasion in the 10th minute when Ronaldo freed himself from a splendid assist from Bernardo Silva, only to find the Ghanaian goalkeeper’s deflection. Among the Portuguese, Otavio is the one who tries with greater continuity but often with weak shots and easy prey for the opposing goalkeeper. The African team, on the other hand, has never been seen near Costa, so much so that the Portuguese defenders have often played on the midfield line.

In the second half, the match changes register: the first opportunity is for the Ghanaians, with Kudus who, after having made the whole pitch in progression, tries the left-footed conclusion by touching the post. Shortly after, the turning point of the game came with the penalty awarded by the US referee Elfath for Ronaldo’s knockdown in the area by Salisu. A contrast that from the replay seems really minimal, with the Ghanaian defender hitting more ball than foot. The referee doesn’t even go to see him again at the Var and therefore allows Ronaldo to score the first goal of his World Cup, thanks to which he becomes the only player in football history to have scored in 5 consecutive World Cups.

The game suddenly lights up, given that after the goal of the Portuguese advantage, it is Ghana who throw themselves forward and in less than ten minutes find the momentary equalizer with Kudus who runs away on the left and then crosses in the center where Ayew anticipates Guerreiro and scores 1-1 in the 73rd minute. The noisy Ghanaian fans didn’t have time to cheer before Portugal immediately found their way to a new advantage in the 78th minute thanks to a vertical invention by Bruno Fernandes who found Joao Felix in the area ready to score the 2-1.

Ghana suffers the blow and after two minutes also suffers the 3-1, this time with AC Milan player Rafael Leao who again with an assist from Bruno Fernandes finds the first goal of his career in the national team on his debut in a World Cup. It all seems over, but Ghana reopens the game with Bukari replacing, thanks also to Cancelo’s defensive error, which infuriates Ronaldo. The 9 minutes of added time were not enough for the Africans to find the equalizer, even if Inaki Williams came very close by stealing the ball from Diogo Costa’s feet for a fraction of a second before slipping and allowing the goalkeeper to recover the ball.
