Over 73 years of marriage. The one between the Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip it was one of the longest-running ties in the history of the monarchies. The couple got married in Westminster Abbey on November 20, 1947

Elizabeth first met her future husbandPrince Philip of Greece and Denmark, in 1934 and, then, in 1937. He was his third cousin, both being great-great-grandchildren of Queen Victoria and direct descendants of Christian IX of Denmark. After another meeting at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, in July 1939, Elizabeth, then only 13, said she fell in love with Philip and began an exchange of letters with him.

The July 9, 1947when she was twenty-one, their engagement was officially announced, also raising some criticism because Philip was born abroad, despite having then served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. Philip Mountbatten had to give up his claim to the throne of Greece, assuming the simple title of lieutenant, and converted to Anglicanism. Shortly before his marriage he was appointed Duke of Edinburgh and was awarded the title of “His Royal Highness”
