The new trailer for Red, the next film from Disney – Pixar which will hit theaters on March 10, 2022.
It tells a singular story, namely that of a little girl named Mei Lee, 13, who when she gets excited too intensely (which happens very often, being a very emotional teenager) suddenly turns into … a huge red panda!
Directed by Academy Award winner Domee Shi, Academy Award-winning director for 2018 short film Bao, and produced by Lindsey Collins, Red is a fantastic comedy about how “a curious defect in the family gene”, as the protagonist’s mother will explain, causes this embarrassing metamorphosis.
After the enormous success of Luca on Disney +, Pixar wants to repeat, returning to theaters in 2022 with this animated gem, whose original title is Turning Red.

The metamorphosis
As the trailer itself suggests, for Mei Lee that congenital “defect” does not reveal itself at birth but only explodes now, in full puberty.
The metamorphosis that adolescence usually involves would not seem that typical of a thirteen year old: we will see Mei struggling with “problems” much worse than some pimples and hormonal changes …
This mysterious change is linked to an ancient bond with the red pandas, a bond that has interested the girl’s family for many generations.
The metaphor of adolescence
In reality, behind that very strange metamorphosis lies the metaphor of adolescence, with the physical changes associated with it and the unmanageable emotions typical of this passing age.
Mei is obsessed, like all her peers, for a boy band: 4 * Town (fictional group). The songs that in Red we will hear from 4 * Town they were signed by Billie Eilish together with her brother Finneas.
“We needed our protagonist Mei to be obsessed with something her mother wouldn’t approve of. Boy bands are the first step into the world of boys for a lot of girls of that age, ”explained director Domee Shi.
From his words, as well as from the official synopsis of the film, we can glimpse an authoritarian mother behind the protagonist. A mother who is always behind her, literally: she slavishly follows her daughter, worried about her as many mothers of teenagers are.
The release of Red is scheduled to hit theaters on March 10, 2022, four months before the other highly anticipated work by Pixar, that is Lightyear, the spin-off of Toy Story dedicated to Buzz.
