The Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister reiterated his position on the sidelines of a visit to Rimini. “The sovereign Parliament will decide, but I believe it is right to maintain the two mandates. It is a principle of protection of democracy in which I recognize myself”
Regarding the hypothesis of a renewed role for regional governors, in view of the next administrative consultations in various territories of the country, “I am not very much in favor of the third mandate. We cannot give those who already have great power even more time to stay. In the United States there are two mandates for the President of the Republic. In Italy, in his territory, a Regional President even has more power than a Prime Minister.” This was said by the Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Antonio Tajani, on the sidelines of a visit to the Scm company in Rimini. “Then the sovereign Parliament will decide” – he concluded – “but I think it is right to maintain the two mandates. It is a principle of protection of democracy in which I recognize myself”.
“Perplexed about leaders’ candidacies”
“I have carried out five electoral campaigns and have been elected five times to the European Parliament and I have always said and expressed some doubts about the possibility of running as a candidate, above all because when you are a minister you risk diverting attention from government activity”. These, however, were the words used by Tajani to reply to those who asked him if he considered it appropriate for party leaders to run in the European elections and then not, in fact, go on to cover the role of MEP. “Then” – he underlined – “the electoral campaign carried out by party leaders serves to motivate the electorate, perhaps also serves to bring more people to vote, so this does not seem to me to be a scandal. It has already happened several times in the past: the my concern is of a different kind” – concluded Tajani – “that is, not being able to dedicate myself 100% to government activity”.
