Roma-Monza 1-0, goal by El Shaarawy in the 90th minute

The Giallorossi scored at the end. Mourinho mocks the opposing bench

Roma beat Monza 1-0 today 22 October 2023 in the lunch match of the ninth day of Serie A thanks to El Shaarawy’s goal, scored in the 90th minute in the match in which the hosts played in superiority for more than a half after the expulsion of D’Ambrosio. Mourinho’s team, who was sent off at the end for provoking the opposing bench, rose in the standings to 14 points while Palladino’s team, despite the good game played, remained stuck on 12.

The match

For the match at the Olimpico after the international break, Mourinho has to deal with a long list of absentees, the heaviest of which is Paulo Dybala. Renato Sanches and Chris Smalling didn’t recover either. Diego Llorente returns but starts from the bench with Cristante moved to defense. Belotti joins Lukaku in attack. Palladino, on the other hand, has to do without Izzo and obviously Papu Gomez. Machin was on the pitch from the 1st minute as part of the pair who will act in support of Colombo in attack.

Low pace at the start of the match with Monza moving the ball around a lot and Roma attempting high pressing to try to put the Lombards’ rearguard in difficulty but with poor results. On the other hand, Monza’s possession was sterile and in the 12th minute they built a first opportunity with Colpani who tried a looping cross which became a shot which Rui Patricio was attentive to. Ball possession rewards Palladino’s team but the first real scoring opportunity comes for the home team. In the 37th minute, goalkeeper Di Gregorio’s intervention was superb as he overcame Aouar’s close-range header following Belotti’s cross. Shortly after the match changes: in the 42nd minute he is sent off by referee Ayroldi D’Ambrosio for a clear foul on Gallo Belotti in the midfield.

The red and white number 33 had already been booked, again for a foul on the yellow and red attacker, and was forced to come off, leaving his team with ten men. In the 46th minute the Monza goalkeeper was once again the protagonist and with one foot on the line he saved Belotti’s header with a great reflex.

With the extra man, Mourinho’s team raises the pace even if it doesn’t change its structure. In the 48th minute the Giallorossi restart with a one-two between Lukaku and Belotti which allows the Belgian to appear in the penalty area, but the dribbling is not completed due to Pessina’s recovery. Monza tried to restart in the 50th minute with Colpani, but his left-footed shot from distance almost reached Rui Patricio’s crossbar to the right. Roma fail to break through and Mou switches to a 4-man defense, bringing in Azmoun and El Shaarawy for Bove and Belotti, with Cristante moving to midfield.

Roma went unbalanced in search of a goal and opened up space in their own half with Monza who tried again from distance in the 66th minute with Birindelli but Rui Patricio deflected it for a corner. In the 71st minute Roma were still dangerous with El Shaarawy running down the left and serving Aouar who shot towards goal but a defender opposed it and sent it into a corner. Shortly after Lukaku served by Azmoun, he finishes powerfully but the ball crashes into the top of the post. Seventh wood hit by Roma in this championship. Monza, however, does not sit idly by and worries the Giallorossi defense in the 75th minute again with Birindelli served by Vignato.

In the 79th minute Lukaku is still the protagonist but Pablo Marin opposes his left foot. The race is open, despite Monza’s inferiority and in the 82nd minute Mancini saves from Vignato. In the 88th minute, the Giallorossi were very close to taking the lead: Lukaku worked a ball into the area very well, ended up on the ground in the area, but managed to serve Azmoun who hit a sure shot but hit the inside post of the Monza goal. The joy of the goal is postponed slightly because it arrives in the 90th minute: Kristensen’s save on Zalewski’s cross, for El Shaarawy who extends the header to Azmoun, whose shot is blocked by the red and white defense, but El Shaarawy is ready to beat the rebound Di Gregorio with a right-footed shot into the center of the area that drives the Olimpico crazy and gives the three points to Mou’s team who is also sent off at the end for protests.
