Samsung unveils the new S24 series, the AI functions tested in preview

As we also saw at CES in Las Vegas, the most important world technology fair that ended a few days ago, the technological trend of the year is certainly artificial intelligence. Not just cars, web services, office suites: even smartphones are starting to natively integrate services and features based on artificial intelligence. We started to see it last autumn with the Google Pixel 8 series and we see it even better at the beginning of this year with the launch of the new Galaxy S24 series from Samsung, which really focuses everything on the “new era” of artificial intelligence in mobile”.

Three models, the Ultra also has a nib

As always, there are three models presented by Samsung: this year there are the S24 (with a 6.2-inch screen), the S24+ (with a 6.7-inch screen) and the top of the range S24 Ultra (with a 6.8 inch flat), which also integrates the S Pen. On all models there are thinner and more uniform frames and resistant and brighter displays compared to the previous series, while on the S24 Ultra comes the titanium frame (the same one present on the iPhone 15 Pro) which offers a more comfortable grip and greater drop resistance. The Qualcomm processors supervise the many artificial intelligence features present in the software – we will analyze them in the next paragraph: the latest one is installed on the Ultra, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform optimized for Galaxy. Other features present on all three models include adaptive screen refresh rates (from 1 to 120 Hz) and a thermal control system with a larger vapor chamber than previous models capable of dissipating heat more efficiently. even more effective.

Features based on artificial intelligence

There are many – integrated within the software – the features based on artificial intelligence that we were able to experiment with in preview, which give the possibility of communicating without barriers, of carrying out searches in a completely new way, of modifying images starting from one’s own photos. and from their videos with generative AI, as we already do – for example – on Copilot or ChatGPT, as Nicolò Bellorini, Vice President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business of Samsung Electronics Italia, tells us. In our test, for example, we very easily completed a dinner reservation in a Korean restaurant by letting artificial intelligence guide us: the (Korean) person we called at the beginning of the phone call received an audio message in Korean in which it was made clear that it was an assisted call; after which we spoke in Italian and our interlocutor received the translation into Korean live, the owner of the restaurant spoke to us in Korean and we were able to read on the screen and listen to his words directly in Italian, as in an almost normal phone call . Furthermore: it is possible to ask the AI to refine the tone of a conversation in chat or in an email by making it more polite, more formal or more engaging while it is possible, after having recorded a long seminar or a long lesson, to obtain in a few seconds the summary of what has been said. Finally, artificial intelligence is also revolutionizing the way we carry out searches: we just need to circle (for example with the S Pen) something we see on the screen – we did the test with a vase – to obtain information thanks to Google Lens precisely on that object: for example the brand, the price, the color variants. For privacy this function cannot be used on people. Many of the tested features are processed directly on the phone, and therefore do not send our personal information to external servers. Furthermore, all these features are also protected, Samsung explains, by the Knox security platform, which protects sensitive data and defends it from attacks thanks also to real-time threat detection.

The photographic sector and generative photography

As for the photographic sector – which has always been the flagship of the Galaxy series – the Ultra houses a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a 200MP main wide-angle camera and two telephoto lenses, one 50 and one 10MP; the front camera is 12MP. The two “younger brother” models instead integrate a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a 50MP main wide-angle camera, a 10MP telephoto lens and a 12MP front lens. The photographic sector is also enhanced by artificial intelligence: after taking a photo, for example, we can select an object or a person and move or resize them (or even delete them) within the photo, with the computer taking care of filling automatically emptied spaces. Furthermore, on the S24 Ultra, the Nightography function has been updated, which allows you to always have perfect shots even in low light conditions: by taking advantage of the larger pixels the function now makes even highly zoomed photos better; and even the videos promise to be less blurry thanks to the analysis of the movements of the person taking the shots and those of the subject.

Galaxy S24, availability and prices

The South Korean company is, as always, very attentive to the environment: they explain to us that the S24 series “continues to increase the variety of recycled materials such as plastic, glass and aluminium, steel and thermoplastic polyurethane” and that for the first time the recycled cobalt and rare earths. Many offers in the first days of launch, these are the list prices in Italy: the S24 (8GB memory, 128/256GB storage space, 4,000 mAh battery) starts at 929 euros; the S24+ (12GB of Ram, 256/512GB of space, 4,900 mAh battery) starts at 1,189 euros; the S24 Ultra (12GB memory, 256GB/512GB/1TB storage space, 5,000 mAh battery) starts at 1,499 euros. Four generations of operating system updates and seven years of security updates are included in the price.
