The 2023/2024 Season of the Teatro alla Scala opens in Milan on Thursday 7 December. Today there was the presentation of the event. The work chosen for the inauguration is the Don Carlo by Giuseppe Verdi, in the version prepared by the composer for La Scala in 1884. “Verdi takes us behind the scenes of power”, said director Lluis Pasqual today. With Don Carlo “a ‘trilogy of power’ which began with Macbeth and continued last year with Boris Godunov”, recalled the maestro Riccardo Chailly.
Comments by Chailly, Pasqual and Meyer
Riccardo Chailly will direct an all-star cast that includes Francesco Meli as Don Carlo, Anna Netrebko as Elisabetta, Elina Garanca (Princess of Ebolo), Michele Pertusi (Philip II), Luca Salsi (Marquis of Posa) and Ain Anger (the Grand Inquisitor) . The traditional direction is entrusted to director Lluis Pasqual, who wanted to give a Shakespearean reading of the work, showing the behind the scenes of power, and used scenes by Daniel Bianco and costumes by Franca Squarciapino. “It is a great work of the world repertoire and we are proud to present it,” said superintendent Dominique Meyer. Meyer confirmed the absence of Sergio Mattarella at the inauguration of La Scala’s opera season on 7 December: “The President of the Republic is not coming this year. We would have liked to welcome him once more but he couldn’t, he will be there next year” . To a question about the possibility of him being reappointed when his mandate expires in 2025, Meyer replied: “I did a good job, let’s hope for the best. I’ve known La Scala since ’80, I love it, I work there 80 hours a week.”
To inaugurate the 2023/2024 Season of the Teatro alla Scala, on Thursday 7 December at 6 pm, it will therefore be the Don Carlo by Giuseppe Verdi. The premiere will be preceded on Sunday 3 December by the Preview for the Under30s and followed until 2 January by seven performances, all already sold out. The work has already inaugurated the Season in 1868, 1878, 1912, 1926, 1968, 1977, 1992 and 2008. As Riccardo Chailly underlined, the Don Carlo it is the completion of a reflection on power extended over three Season openings, after Macbeth by Verdi in 2021 and Boris Godunov in 2022. But it is also a return to the Verdi of his maturity, after the three inaugurations dedicated to the evolution of his early works with Giovanna D’Arco in 2015, Attila in 2018 and Macbeth in 2021.
This year too Allianz will be the official partner of the Prima: “Allianz has been the Permanent Founder of the Teatro alla Scala since 2018 and participates in the work of the Board of Directors to promote the sustainability of present and future plans”, CEO Giacomo Campora proudly declared.
