The mayor had interrupted the director of surgery at the Mirandola hospital, while he was talking about the future hiring of the departments, saying: “He has hired two beautiful young and strong women while he”, referring to another doctor in the room, ” they only give us wrecks.” An apology after the controversy
Sauro Borghi, PD mayor of the municipality of San Prospero, in the Modena area, has self-suspended from the party after the sexist phrase uttered during a public meeting on local healthcare. During the event, the mayor had interrupted the director of surgery of the Mirandola hospital, while he was talking about the future hiring of the departments, with this sentence: “He has hired two beautiful, young and strong women, while he”, referring to another doctor present in the room, “they only give rubbish”. Words that had understandably caused a lot of discussion. Today Borghi summoned the press to apologize for what happened, after the criticism received yesterday both, among others, from the Women’s Conference of the Democratic Party and from Giuditta Pini, a member of the national leadership of the same party from Modena.
“I apologize to the women of the Democratic Party”
“I apologize”, is the central passage of Borghi’s communication, “to all the women who for years have committed themselves to pursuing the objective of equal opportunities and the battles on gender violence which I have always condemned and will always condemn; I apologize to women of the Democratic Party who correctly distanced themselves from my statement which in that context was only intended to be an ironic joke, certainly unfortunate, but out of respect for them I have self-suspended from the party; I would like to point out to them that their values are the same as those that animate me always. I apologize to my daughters who warned me about what happened but – adds the mayor – knowing me they understood that my apologies are heartfelt. I hope that further controversy will not be fueled, because I never, ever thought of offending no one. I think this situation has been greatly decontextualized and too exploited.” Finally, Borghi recalled that in the past he was “a supporter of the birth of the local anti-violence centre, promoter of the birth of the ‘I talents of Minerva’ association, made up of women who have gender equality as their primary objective”.
