Smoke and ash from Canada, it’s an emergency in New York. The governor: “Unhealthy air”

Mayor Adams has advised wearing a mask and limiting all outdoor activities

New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of “emergency” after the city’s air became “unhealthy” due to fires in Canada. Alarms have been raised for air pollution which has reached “emergency crisis” levels in New York, Hochul said.

Tens of millions of people in North America woke up yesterday to dangerous levels of air quality. Smoke has blanketed large swathes of Ontario and Quebec, while an orange haze hangs over much of the northeastern United States. Some cities, including Toronto and New York, briefly experienced the worst air quality in the world.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has advised wearing a mask and limiting all outdoor activities. Poor air quality in northeastern US cities has led to the cancellation of some major sporting events. The New York City public hospital system has revealed that it has experienced a dramatic increase in patients with respiratory problems due to the smoke filled air.
