Sony announces that it has sold 40 million PS5s worldwide

SIE CEO Jim Ryan thanks for the record and recalls the timing of the console’s launch, during the pandemic

Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially announced that it has reached 40 million PlayStation 5 units sold worldwide since launch in November 2020. Commenting on the milestone, Jim Ryan, President & CEO, commented: “We launched PlayStation 5 in November 2020 and the world was in a completely different state than when we announced the console in 2019. Despite the unprecedented challenges brought about by Covid, our teams and partners have worked diligently to get PS5 on time. facing adverse winds with the pandemic, and it took months for supply chains to normalize so that we had enough inventories to keep up with demand. For more months than I care to remember, we have continued to thank our community for your patience in resolving these issues. But now the PS5 supply is well stocked, and demand is finally being met.” In fact, since last spring, Sony has made the console available without endless waits, and recently the price of 100 euros was also cut for a promotional period.

“With the support of PlayStation fans we have reached the milestone of 40 million PS5s sold to players since launch. A heartfelt thanks goes to our community, without you this achievement would have been an impossible task,” continues Ryan. “PS5 launched with the best catalog of titles in our history, and the drive to deliver great content continues unabated. From groundbreaking indies to AAA blockbusters, there are currently over 2,500 PS5 games available and it’s never been a best time to enjoy PS5. In the last couple of months alone, we’ve seen incredible titles from our partners, including Final Fantasy XVI, Diablo IV, and Street Fighter 6. We’ve built PS5 with our community in mind, which has led to great innovations, such as the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback of the DualSense controller and PlayStation VR2. PlayStation Studios and our third-party partners have leveraged these features to expand their creative tools, in order to offer a generational leap in the experiences offered to gamers”.
