Initial investigations show that the former president of the People’s Party (PP) was attacked by two individuals on board a black motorbike. Meloni: “Vile and unacceptable violence”
The former president of the People’s Party (PP) of Catalonia and founder of Vox, Alejo Vidal-Quadras, was wounded in the face by gunshots around 1.30pm in the center of Madrid. Spanish police sources reported this to El Pais, specifying that the politician was transferred in serious condition to the ‘Gregorio Maranon’ hospital, but conscious. Officers rushed to the scene and investigations are underway. Emergency room sources reported that Vidal-Quadras has a single wound in the jaw area with an entry and exit wound, is stable and his life his life is not in danger.
Initial investigations show that two people took part in the attack. According to eyewitnesses, a person wearing a motorcycle helmet approached the Vox co-founder and shot him point blank from about two meters away and then fled on a motorcycle together with an accomplice. According to El Pais, the police are currently treating the incident as a common crime event and not as a terrorist attack.
The Iranian trail
However, an Iranian lead is also being followed in the investigation. According to sources cited by both El Pais and El Mundo, it was the politician himself, who is not in danger of his life, who indicated to the investigators the possibility that the attack was linked to his activity in defense of members of the Iranian opposition . El Mundo recalls that Vidal-Quadras has long had contacts with the People’s Mujahideen Organization of Iran group, and last year the Iranian Foreign Ministry placed him on a blacklist, accusing him of “deliberate actions in support of the terrorism and terrorist groups, promotion and incitement to terrorism”.
