Poppi is a small town of medieval origin, located in a border area. It belongs to the province of Arezzo but is a few kilometers from Emilia Romagna.

The location in the center of the Roman intersection meant that San Casciano it prospered economically until the 15th century: its strategic position, in fact, made it one of the most famous stops on the road to Rome.

Thanks to the discovery of both Etruscan and Roman finds, it was possible to date the origins of the city, and explain those of the name – which initially was San Casciano in Decimo, with reference to its position at the tenth “mile” on the Roman road between Fiorentina And Sena Giulia.

As well as many other cities that have sprung up along the Florentine border, San Casciano it was considered a strategic military outpost aimed at protecting the medieval city of Florence from invasions.

Towards the fifteenth century, when Florence decided that San Casciano needed more protection, the imposing city walls were born, the usual ones that can still be seen today while walking through the city center.
