“I firmly support Israel and condemn Hamas.” Five leaders reiterated this after a videolink summit held on Monday evening on the crisis in the Middle East: US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The United States and its European allies have underlined that the priority now is the hostages. Furthermore, they stated that they recognize “the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people” but explained that they will “support” the Jewish State “in its efforts to defend itself” (HAMAS-ISRAEL WAR, ALL UPDATES – THE SPECIAL).
“The absolute priority is the protection of the lives of the hostages”
After the telephone conversation between the leaders, Palazzo Chigi said: “The five heads of state and government expressed firm support for Israel and unequivocal condemnation of the appalling criminal acts of Hamas, which have caused a terrible number of victims innocent people, including children, women and the elderly. We then discussed the most urgent political initiatives to be undertaken together. The protection of the lives of the hostages, starting with children, including very young children, is an absolute priority and efforts will be concentrated on this diplomats”. Furthermore, President Meloni, “in reaffirming Israel’s right to defend itself, indicated the need to work to avoid an expansion of the crisis at a regional level and to protect the civilian population involved”. “The five heads of state and government – it is explained further in the note – they agreed to keep in constant contact as the crisis continues.”
“Firm and united support for the State of Israel”
The White House also reiterated that the five leaders express “firm and united support for the State of Israel and unequivocal condemnation of Hamas and its appalling acts of terrorism”. “Our countries – we read again in the note from the US administration – will support Israel in its efforts to defend itself and its people from such atrocities. We also emphasize that this is not the time for any party hostile to Israel to exploit these attacks to seek an advantage.” “In the coming days – continues the note – we will remain united as allies and as mutual friends of Israel, to ensure that it is able to defend itself and to create the conditions for a peaceful and integrated Middle East. We all recognize the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people and support measures of justice and freedom for both Israelis and Palestinians. But be careful: Hamas does not represent those aspirations and offers the Palestinian people nothing other than terror and bloodshed.”
