THE LAUNCHING

  • The launch was organized by the Ministry of Defense which also wanted a navigation test at sea in the presence of President Tsai Ing-wen, who led the ceremony in the southern port city of Kaohsiung

FIRST OF EIGHT UNITS

  • The submarine cost $1.54 billion and is one of eight units in the ambitious plan to strengthen Taiwan’s defenses
  • Named ‘Hai Kun’ in honor of the mythical and enormous fish that can also fly, according to classical Chinese literature, the diesel-electric powered submarine was developed in the CSBC shipyards

AVAILABLE BY THE END OF 2024

  • According to military officials reported by local media, after the launch the vessel will be subjected to various tests and delivered to the Navy by the end of 2024. Meanwhile, another submarine is currently in production
  • Taipei aims to operate a fleet of 10 submarines, including the two oldest Dutch-made ones, and equip them with missiles to discourage Chinese ambitions

OBJECTIVE TO REJECT BEIJING

  • The head of the national submarine program, Admiral Huang Shu-kuang, said last week that the goal was to repel Beijing’s attempts at an invasion or naval blockade
  • The aim is to at least buy the time necessary for the arrival of support from US and Japanese forces, which is taken for granted

BEIJING: “ONLY ILLUSION”

  • The Global Times, Beijing’s nationalist tabloid, said Taipei was “daydreaming” and that the submarine plan was “just an illusion.”
