“I don’t take political positions. Also because I would risk harming the prisoner. When negotiating, silence is golden”
“Many people moved, the chief prosecutor went to visit her, there was certainly great attention from the Hungarian authorities: but we must not forget that there are more than 2,400 Italians detained in the world, we follow and give assistance to everyone”. This is what Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated, speaking about the case of Ilaria Salis, in an interview with Corriere della Sera, adding that “even yesterday in Brussels I spoke with the Hungarian Foreign Minister, we found a willingness to listen to us , they are carrying out all the checks we asked for on the protection of the prisoner.”
“We were impressed by the way in which Mrs Salis was translated into court. We will follow the case with the respect due to the procedures of Hungarian justice, but we will carefully and continuously support the family and the lawyers”, continued Tajani.
When asked for a comment on the words of Matteo Salvini who said that Salis can no longer be a teacher, the Foreign Minister then replied: “It is his assessment, I am a guarantor and until she is condemned for me Salis is a citizen accused, but still innocent like everyone else. I don’t take political positions. Also because I would risk harming the prisoner. When negotiating, silence is golden.”
