The contest, which took place between April 22 and June 5, saw the participation of 101 photographers, professionals and amateurs, who shared on Instagram almost 400 shots accompanied by the hashtag # scattailboscoPefc22. To select the winners of the competition a jury composed of a photographer and a representative of the Pefc Italia Secretariat; the “likes” obtained from the photos on Instagram also contributed to the final vote for a quarter of the total.

“The goal of Pefc has always been to increase the sustainable forest management of forests around the world through the promotion of forest certification. With this competition we support our promotion work by looking for the most surprising and stimulating images of the green areas of our Country, “he explains Eleonora Mariano, head of the Projects office of Pefc Italia. “Thanks to their photos, the photographers have allowed and will allow the entire Pefc Alliance (which is currently present in 56 countries around the world) to communicate through images and in a more engaging way what we continue to fight for: a world in which people manage forests in a sustainable way “.

On top step of the podium this year the photo rises ‘Fresh snow’, shot in Val Bartolo (Udine) by Sonia Fantini, already gold medal in the international competition of the 2019 edition. The winner wins a package for two people at Monte Amiata (Tuscany), among the certified Pefc forests managed by the Consortium Amiata Forestry. The prize includes an overnight stay for one night at the ‘Le Macinaie’ Hotel in Castel del Piano (Gr), including dinner for two and an excursion to the forests of the Amiata Forestry Consortium.

To the second place Manuelo Bececco, for the shot ‘The deer’ made in the Casentinesi Forest National Park, in Tuscany, which is assigned a selection of six wines from the Terre Margaritelli Winery, kept in a packaging made with wood and cardboard certified by Pefc + Volume ‘Silva Lupanica – Soul of a Friulian wood ‘by photographer Anne Mäenurm. Lake of Pantano, in the Municipality of Mormanno and in the Pollino National Park, in Calabria, is instead the protagonist of the photo “Lady in a yellow coat” by Fabio Filomena, who won the bronze medal and a kit consisting of a notebook, diary and many other Pefc certified stationery items. Furthermore, for the second consecutive year, Pefc Italia has chosen to address the theme of the climate crisis also through images, assigning a special mention, in collaboration with Rete Clima, to the photograph that best represents the theme “Trees and climate change”.

To win the mention is the photo “Green Lung”, taken by Irene Toneatto on the road that goes from Passo Giau to Selva di Cadore, in Veneto. The photographer will have the opportunity to neutralize her CO2 emissions for the year 2022, giving her name trees to the city of Milan; the urban forestation activity will be carried out by Rete Clima. “While in the 2021 edition you won a photo taken after the Vaia storm, to underline the impact of climate change on forests, this year the message is the opposite. The winning photo, in fact, tells how sustainable forest management can really help in the fight against climate change ”, explains Eleonora Mariano.

‘The house of the Smurfs’, taken by Daniele De Rubeis in the Casentinesi Forest National Park, and “Ormuvrones Sa Portiscra Urzulei”, created by Alessandro Ledda in the ‘Sa Portiscra’ Wildlife Oasis, in the Sardinian municipality of Urzulei, are finally the two further photos selected by the jury and which will access, together with the three official winners, the international phase of the Pefc photo contest in which the winners of all 11 participating nations will participate. Among these will be chosen the overall winner at international level who will receive a cash prize of 2,000 Swiss francs.
