Teacher suspended in Oristano, Valditara: “Prayers were not an isolated episode”

The minister: “From the documentation underlying the disciplinary decision, it concerns repeated prayers and religious chants during the disciplinary hours”. Inspectors sent to verify the correctness of the procedure

“As soon as the story emerged” of the teacher suspended in Oristano for having recited prayers in a class “I asked for a detailed report on the facts after which we sent the inspectors to verify that the procedure was correct. I can only say that it is not a question of the occasional recitation of a prayer, but, from the documentation underlying the disciplinary decision, it is a question of repeated prayers and religious songs in the disciplinary hours“. This is what the minister said Joseph Vallettara spoke live on Tg4-Diario del Giorno broadcast on Retequattro regarding the case.

After several ‘good-natured’ interventions by the headteacher – explained the minister – a disciplinary procedure was activated which ended with a 20-day sanction after which, as soon as the news emerged, I requested a detailed report and we sent the inspectors to verify that the procedure was carried out correctly. Obviously the teacher can appeal to the labor judge, I can only say that it is not a question of the episodic recitation of a prayer but, from the documentation underlying the disciplinary decision, it is a question of repeated prayers and religious songs in the disciplinary hours”. So “the accusation is that instead of teaching history, geography, mathematics, the teacher would have had religious hymns sung and prayed, therefore it is a violation of a legal obligation“.
