“The cinematographic left in Italy 1950/1990”, a film festival with meetings and debates at the Casa del Cinema in Rome from 6 to 9 December arrives, curated by the study and work group of the Audiovisual Archive of the Labor and Democratic Movement. Added to this is a double day of work, scheduled for 9 and 10 December, at the Roma Tre University.
After having dealt with four editions on very demanding issues, this year on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the birth of the PCI, the working group considered it useful to reflect on the relations between the parties of the left and their choices in the field of cultural politics – the Party Communist and the Socialist Party in the first place – and the world of Italian cinema.
“Reflecting on the very close relationship between the left and Italian cinema since the 1950s means analyzing a profitable, but also highly contrasted relationship, in the various passages of the history of republican Italy, from the hard years of the ‘cold war’ until the self-dissolution of the PCI “. This is explained by the scholars of the team composed of Dario Cecchi, Marco Maria Gazzano, Antonio Medici, Alma Mileto, Pietro Montani, Claudio Olivieri, Ivelise Perniola, Giovanni Spagnoletti, Ermanno Taviani, Maurizio Zinni, coordinated by Paola Scarnati, with the participation and the commitment of the president of the Aamod Foundation, Vincenzo Vita. The approach to the subject will be interdisciplinary, starting in the first place with the contributions of film critics and film scholars, historians, filmmakers, witnesses, archivists who will alternate over the four days of the exhibition to present and debate on a careful selection of great and significant films of Italian cinema, but also lesser known works, documentaries of all formats and innovative TV programs.
The initiative aims not only to address those who already know the cinematography of that chapter of the history of Italy but also, first of all, to a younger audience, such as the university one.
The cinema left in Italy 1950/1990 is an initiative conceived and promoted by the Audiovisual Archive of the Labor and Democratic Movement and by the Gramsci Foundation, with the support of the Ministry of Culture (Directorate General for Cinema and Audiovisual), in collaboration with the Casa del Cinema, the Experimental Center of Cinematography – National Film Archive and the Roma Tre University.
