Sky and Peacock today announce that Eddie Redmayne (The Good Nurse, The Chicago 7 trialAnd The theory of everything), Oscar®, Tony Award and Bafta Award-winning actor, will star (as the Jackal) and executive produce the new series The Day of the Jackalinspired by the historical thriller written by Frederick Forsyth The Day of the Jackal and Universal Pictures’ 1973 film adaptation of the same name.

Contemporary reinterpretation

The Day of the Jackal is an innovative contemporary reimagining of the novel and film that while staying true to the DNA of the original work will delve into the chameleonic “anti-hero” at the center of the story, in a thriller set in the turbulent geopolitical landscape of our time, in an international hunt for man, a high voltage game of cat and mouse.

Writer, director and producer

Irish screenwriter and novelist Ronan Bennett, creator and writer of the globally acclaimed hit Top Boy, will be author writer and showrunner. Among Bennett’s works also the BBC series One Gunpowder with Kit Harington, face And Public Enemies with Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. Directed by Brian Kirk (game of Thrones, Luther, BoardwalkEmpire, 21 Bridges). The series is produced by Carnival Films (Downton Abbey, The Last Kingdom), part of Universal International Studios, a division of Universal Studio Group, and was commissioned by Sky and Peacock.

Gareth Neame, Managing Director & Executive Producer at Carnival Films: “We are thrilled to bring Ronan Bennett’s remake of Forsyth’s iconic thriller to life in the complex world we live in today and are incredibly fortunate to have an actor of Eddie’s caliber to play our Jackal. Our world-class creative team also has a screenplay by Ronan and direction by Brian Kirk.”
