“It is time to have a new brand for our company, which includes everything we do. I am therefore proud to tell you that from today the name will be Meta”. So Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, during the opening of the company’s annual conference.
The company will change its name to Meta to reflect growth opportunities beyond the social media platform in the online digital realms known as the metaverse, a kind of virtual reality shared via the internet where one is represented in three dimensions through one’s avatar. “Over time, I hope our company will be seen as a metaverse company.”
“Our mission remains the same, our apps and their names will not change, but now we have a new North Star: to bring the metaverse to life. From now on it will be the metaverse first (metaverse first), not Facebook first (Facebook first)” , he remarked in reference to the new name. “The metaverse will be the successor to the mobile Internet.” So continued the CEO. Zuckerberg also pointed out that the company has commissioned and is conducting numerous studies on “security, privacy and inclusion” of the metaverse.
